Using his military skill and devotion to duty, Constantius II, the middle son of Constantine I the Great and his second wife, became the sole ruler of the Roman Empire. Skirmishes with the Persians continued throughout his reign. The sheer size and frequent raids on all portions of the Empire meant that he needed someone to share the burden of ruling. He appointed his young cousin, Julian. After ruling for 24 years, Constantius II died of a fever.
