In 1999, the U.S. Mint began a new series honoring all 50 states of the Union on circulating quarters. Five different issues were released each year in the order of statehood, with reverse designs representing the featured states. John Flanagan’s original Washington portrait obverse was retained but slightly modified to make room for the new, changing reverse designs. The series proved extremely popular among collectors.
