Draped Bust Dollar: Heraldic Eagle Reverse (1798-1804)

In 1798, the U.S. Mint gave the Draped Bust silver dollar a new reverse. The obverse kept Robert Scot’s classic image of Liberty with a plunging neckline and a ribbon in her long hair. But unlike previous issues, the number of stars around her was fixed at 13. A new reverse by Scot bore a large heraldic eagle adapted from the Great Seal of the United States. Minor design adjustments throughout the series created several varieties for collectors.
