Shield Pennies (2010-2025): A Brief History

The reverse design of Lincoln shield pennies has several symbolic meanings. First, the shield itself has 13 vertical stripes, each representing one of the 13 original colonies. Additionally, the horizontal bar across the top represents Congress. There are also two sets of initials on the one cent shield penny: “LB” for designer Lyndall Bass and “JFM” for sculptor Joseph F. Menna who translated the design into a coinable model.
