Since 1986, the reverse of the Silver American Eagles series has featured the heraldic eagle design of John Mercanti. However, in 2021, after 35 years, the reverse has been changed to feature a design by Emily Damstra. Emily Damstra graduated from the University of Michigan with a Masters of Fine Arts (MFA) degree in science illustration. She continued her career as a freelance artist, science illustrator, coin designer, and medalist. Being part of the U.S. Mint's Artistic Infusion Program (AIP), she has designed numerous coins and medals. Out of 39 final designs, the Secretary of the Treasury chose Damstra's landing bald eagle to be featured on the American Silver Eagle series.
