Description

A genuine 1893 World's Columbian Exposition Commemorative Silver Half Dollar Coin. Contains 90% Silver

This historic 90% silver half dollar is from the first official U.S. commemorative coin issue. The mint struck these coins to commemorate the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago. Designed by Olin Lewis Warner, it was brought to life by two legends of American coinage. The obverse was engraved by Charles E. Barber, who created the classic Liberty Head motif. It bears a detailed bust of Christopher Columbus. George T. Morgan, creator of the Morgan dollar, engraved the reverse. It depicts Columbus' flagship, the Santa Maria, above two hemispheres and the dates 1492 and 1892.
