Description

A genuine 1938 New Rochelle New York 250th Anniversary Commemorative Silver Half Dollar Coin, in BU Very Choice Uncirculated Mint State Condition. Contains 90% Silver

This 90% silver commemorative half dollar marked the 150th anniversary of the founding of New Rochelle, New York in 1688. When John Pell sold the site to the French Huguenots who settled it, he required a fattened calf be delivered each year on June 20 - a scene that is shown on the coin's obverse. The reverse depicts a large fleur-de-lis, from the seal of the city. The date 1938 also appears on the reverse. However, the entire series was minted in 1937. Of the 25,000 produced, all but 15,266 were returned to the mint and melted for reuse.
