The seventh issue in the Titans of American Innovation series honors Dr. Jonas Salk - the American virologist who created the first safe and effective polio vaccine. Dr. Salk and his team at the University of Pittsburg worked tirelessly to find a cure and became national heroes when their vaccine was approved for general use April 12, 1955. By 1963, fewer than 100 annual cases were reported. And by 1979, polio had been eradicated in the United States.
