This 90% silver half dollar bears one of the last classic commemorative designs. It was issued to honor the life and teachings of Booker T. Washington. It also helped raise funds to build memorials in his memory. The coin was designed by Isaac Scott Hathaway. The obverse bears his portrait of Washington, which is based on a life mask. The reverse shows the New York University Hall of Fame and the log cabin in which Washington was born. Between the two is the legend FROM SLAVE CABIN TO HALL OF FAME.
