A brilliant soldier and able leader, Alexander III, most commonly known as Alexander the Great, conquered most of the known world by age 32. He created an empire stretching from Egypt to India. This silver Drachm shows Alexander's favorite hero, Hercules, wearing the hide of the mythical Nemean Lion. According to legend, no weapon could pierce the lion's hide, so after he strangled the beast, Hercules wore the skin for protection.
