Description
This 3 coin set of 1953 Washington-Carver commemorative silver half dollars, contains one example from each mint that struck them, Philadelphia, Denver and San Francisco, all in BU Very Choice Uncirculated Mint State condition. Each coin contains 90% silver.
This historic 90% silver half dollar bears the last classic commemorative design. The U.S. Mint would not strike another commemorative for 28 years. This final issue honors the lives and achievements of two prominent black Americans. It also helped preserve the republic, as sale of the coins raised funds to fight the spread of communism. The obverse shows side-by-side portraits of George Washington Carver and Booker T. Washington. Two rows of inscriptions surround them. A map of the United States stamped U.S.A. is on the reverse, with the legends AMERICANISM and FREEDOM AND OPPORTUNITY FOR ALL.
