Description
A genuine 1952 Washington Quarter Proof Coin, FS-901 'Superbird' variety, with the S mint mark on the eagle's chest, graded and certified PF 66 by ANACS. Contains 90% Silver. It is strongly believed that a Mint employee, and big fan of the very popular Superman TV show airing during 1952, deliberately struck an S mint mark on the reverse die of a 1952 proof Washington quarter. Consequently, all 1952 proof quarters struck from this die also contained the S mint mark on the eagle's chest. Approximately 15,000 proof Washington quarters, 1/5th of the entire mintage, were struck with the 'Superbird' variety.
The obverse of this Washington quarter bears John Flanagan's familiar portrait of America's first president. Its reverse features his depiction of a proud eagle with spread wings, perched on a bundle of arrows above two olive branches.
