Pescennius Niger became the governor of Syria after a long military career, and his troops proclaimed him emperor after the murder of Pertinax. After Severus secured Rome, he focused on Niger in the East. Niger consolidated his power and with nine legions, marched to meet Severus. In A.D. 194, after suffering a serious defeat, Niger was captured and executed.
