Description
A genuine 1858 O Seated Liberty Silver Half Dollar Coin. Contains 90% Silver. Certified authentic shipwreck coinage from the SS Republic. Portions of the coin exhibit heavy to severe disturbance from saltwater exposure, with metal loss affecting the design. The SS Republic was a sidewheel steamship that was lost in a hurricane off the coast of Georgia in October 1865, en route to New Orleans, with a cargo of $400,000 in coins, mostly in gold $10 and $20 pieces, intended for use as hard currency after the Civil War. In August 2003, the wreck of the Republic was located by Odyssey Marine Exploration, Inc. about 100 miles southeast of Savannah, Georgia, in about 1,700 feet (520 meters) of water. A salvage effort recovered about one-third of the rare 19th-century gold and silver coins carried aboard, worth an estimated $75 million.
This 90% silver Liberty Seated half dollar was struck over a century ago. Its classic obverse shows Liberty seated on a rock, holding a Union Shield, a ribbon inscribed LIBERTY and a Liberty cap atop a pole. 13 stars and the date surround her. The reverse depicts an American eagle with Union Shield, an olive branch and three arrows. Encircling the reverse are UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and HALF DOLLAR.
