1900 Indian Head Pennies: A Brief History

Designed by James B. Longacre, Indian Head pennies (1859-1909) are an iconic series in U.S. coinage. They feature Lady Liberty wearing a Native American-style headdress on the obverse and a wreath encircling the denomination "ONE CENT" on the reverse with a shield at the top.

All 1900 Indian pennies were struck at the Philadelphia mint but bear no mint mark. They're composed of 95% copper and 5% zinc and tin, a shift from the early years of the series (1859-1864) when they were made from 88% copper and 12% nickel. 1900 one cent coins are becoming harder to find as time goes by. PCGS estimates there are fewer than 4,000 remaining across all varieties and condition levels despite over 79 million being struck.
