Valerius Gratus, prefect (governor) of Judaea struck this coin during Tiberius' reign. Only the Roman emperors' names appear on the coins of the prefects. The obverse bears Tiberius' name: TIB KAI CAP (Tiberius Caesar), surrounded by a wreath. His mother's name in Greek IOY A *IA (*note, first A: greek symbol lambda) and a palm branch curving to the right is on the reverse; beneath, date: LE (year 5).
