Valerian II received the title of Caesar in A.D. 256 when his father Gallienus was promoted. Later that year, Valerian II joined his father on the Danube frontier fighting against the invading Germans. There, he either was killed or died of natural causes; history has left no record. During this period, the Roman Empire suffered attacks by barbarians, revolts, famine and plague.
